Being Homeless!

Being homeless, what does that mean to a person?  Some of the people that I have talked to seem to think that being homeless are the bottom of the barrel.  Being homeless means that you have fallen as far as the person can and they have are at the end of the rope on what to do next.  Do they ask to stay at a friend’s place while they get back on their feet?

I thought about that as I sat watching people walking around on a sunny day and they were enjoying being outside where the sun could warm the old, tired bones up.  It is not a challenge for a person to think of many things to do while it is nice outside, but the problem comes when the weather turns bad such as snow, ice, windy, or rain.  What do they do on the day when the weather is below zero and there is more snow falling?

Are they shelters open twenty hours a day when the weather is below zero?  The people that I have talked to say that everyone that sleeps at a homeless shelter is suppose to be up and out of the shelter by eight in the morning.  The friends that I do know that live in a homeless shelter, have stayed at my house when it is cold outside.  Too cold to be on the outside, but my friends have too much pride to ask each day that it is too cold if they can stay at my place.

I love my friends dearly, but my neighbors don’t like too have them milling around the place too much.  I honestly can’t blame my neighbors because it is their place to live also and I have to respect their opinions just like they do mine.  What is that golden rule?  Treat others like you would like to be treated

There are many places that will let a homeless person stay when the weather turns bad.  Such as local libraries and churches which the churches will also offer a free meal for the homeless people to warm their belly.   Some of the churches will let the homeless people stay in the basement during the day, in hopes to keep them out of the cold weather and away from being sick.

That is one thing that I have always wondered about?  What happens when a homeless person get the flu or needs medical attention?  Does the local hospital take care of a homeless person if they need medical attention?

When talking with the local hospital, I was told that they can have about six charity cases and they usually save those for the homeless people that do walk in seeking medical attention.  Recently, the hospitals are seeing an increase in people coming in for medical attention and giving information that is made up.  They will give a false name, address, and phone information.  Instead, of asking to be a charity case, they will give a made up information to the staff that is kind enough to help them.

I can understand why the person gives made up information, but my information has never been used by someone else.  Maybe, I would feel different if that would happen because of the stress of convictions the hospital that I wasn’t there.

Homeless people think they are at the bottom of the barrel with no where else to go and regular people (like you and me) don’t really like having a homeless people around since we have heard some horror stories about them.

I always think about what it says it the Bible “God will bless His Children and His Children will turn around to bless the people that are having a hard time.”  That includes widows, widowers, and the homeless.  Please remember the golden rule also “Treat other people like you would want to be treated in that circumcision.”
